It is not often that you will find someone in Nicaragua to open up and share their struggles. Typically, families cling to positive thoughts to carry them through. “Today is hard, but tomorrow will be better” is something I have heard countless times. Regardless of their situations, people have hope in God’s promises to carry them through their struggles.
On a recent trip to Nicaragua, someone opened up and shed light on real life situations she and her family have been facing. Ursula welcomed us into her kitchen as she could not stop her responsibility of making tortillas for her family. “Life is hard,” she said as she pounded out her next tortilla. She continued, saying “No matter what we do, we just can’t get ahead.” Her despair was heart-wrenching.
There are many women just like Ursula out there, needing a hand-up opportunity to lift their families out of extreme poverty. I love Ursula’s humility and openness in sharing about her struggles. I also love knowing that our work in Ursula’s community has just begun. El Chile is still in the triage phase of our partnership as we are working to get the community healthy and organized. The best is yet to come.
These are the people God has led us to, and we are excited to see at work in the families’ lives over the next ten years. Just like our partner families, we too have hope that tomorrow will be better.
