Education is My Favorite Program, and Here's Why.

People often ask what my favorite program is. How in the world do you choose?! Healthcare, Nutrition, Economic Development, and Housing are all life-changing programs, but over the years I have become overwhelmingly impressed by the change created through a simple education.
Did you know? Without a high school diploma, Nicaraguans are unable to work entry-level positions like we work as high school students in the US –- cashier, server, or gas pump attendants to name a few. Yes, they still have gas pump attendants in Nicaragua!
How do you overcome extreme poverty if you are not able to get a decent job? This is the tough reality hundreds of thousands of families face in rural Nicaragua. It is a problem that can and is being changed through education.
Throughout Rainbow Network’s 25 years, we have seen scholarship students graduate high school, put themselves through college, and uplift themselves, their families, and their communities. Once a graduate succeeds in working somewhere outside the farm setting, the desire for education spreads like a wildfire and all the parents want the same success for their children.
Good health and nutrition, decent housing, and a home-run business are all important. However, time-and-time again we are reminded by the community members that education is their favorite part of the work we do. I completely agree with them.
We are heading into a big decision we make each year towards the end of summer -- how many students can we take on for the upcoming school year? This all depends on you. The number of scholarships given each year is decided by the number of sponsored students we currently have and how many we think we can find sponsors for over the next twelve months. In other words, the more students we have sponsored now, the more students we can take on for 2021. Can you help us increase this opportunity?
Help us by sharing your personal experience with your students and invite your friends and family to seek the same relationship with a rural Nicaraguan student. Take on an additional student for your family to get to know and encourage as they face the uphill battle of earning an education. Pray that doors may open for new sponsors to be found and for the students to have the desire and ability to succeed in all they endure. Education changes lives. You make this possible. Thank you.
