From the moment I met Mel West, I have been inspired to “do all the good I can, by all the means I can, in all the ways I can, in all the places I can, at all the times I can, to all the people I can, as long as I ever can” as he often quoted John Wesley. Those are not just words to Mel; they are his life’s mission. He has taught me, and what I can imagine to be thousands of others, to do the same.
Mel started on his journey with Rainbow Network when he was around 70 years old, bringing with him decades of experience in a variety of local and international missions. This month, as we celebrate Mel’s 100th birthday, we see his influence in each of our programs, our loyal donors, and our commitment to ‘treat others as we would like to be treated’, as he often quotes.
Not only has Mel brought us ideas and advice throughout the years, but he has also personally supported our work.
He has helped 75 students graduate from high school, funded 25 homes with more on the way, sponsored medical care for various patients, traveled to Nicaragua 5 times, helped bring clean water to communities, provided meals for our nutrition centers, and supported budding entrepreneurs in their start-up ventures.
The legacy that Mel is creating goes far beyond these numbers. His contributions will have ripple effects for lifetimes far into the future. May we all learn from Mel and follow his lead in generosity, encouragement, and pursuing the goodwill of others.
Happy birthday, Mel!
